Increasing awareness and utilization of low dose aspirin to reduce preeclampsia and preterm birth
Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation, Inc., with its mission to positively impact the healthcare community, joined forces with March of Dimes in 2024 to support advancing improvements in low dose aspirin utilization to reduce the risks of preeclampsia and preterm birth.
Numerous studies show the benefits of taking low dose aspirin, otherwise known as baby aspirin or 81 mg (milligrams) aspirin, to reduce the negative impacts of preeclampsia in pregnant women and subsequent preterm birth that can occur as a result of the condition. That’s why March of Dimes began development of a nationwide framework in 2023 to implement a comprehensive low dose aspirin campaign to reduce rates of preeclampsia and preterm birth.
Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation, Inc., is helping to mobilize our low dose aspirin campaign objectives by funding a California-based pilot of the campaign in five communities that show higher-than-normal rates of preeclampsia and subsequent preterm births. After piloting the campaign in these communities, the goal of our collaboration will be to roll out the low dose aspirin campaign and framework throughout California.
Our partnership strategy involves various targeted approaches, including research, data collection, provider education, and patient education. Within hospitals and clinics in the five pilot communities, March of Dimes is collecting, monitoring, and analyzing data on the use of low dose aspirin by pregnant women treated in these sites, and conducting research into the specific factors influencing utilization and outcomes in preterm birth and newborn weight among patients taking low dose aspirin.
We’re also providing education sessions for healthcare providers in the pilot sites to increase their understanding of the benefits of low dose aspirin and the instances in which they prescribe low dose aspirin to their high-risk pregnant patients. And we’re developing patient-focused communications to encourage women to ask their doctor about taking low dose aspirin during pregnancy, and to know the risks and warning signs of preeclampsia.
Together, March of Dimes and Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation, Inc., are elevating the benefits of taking low dose aspirin as a scalable, evidence-based strategy to reduce rates of preeclampsia and preterm birth in the US.
